Roguelike Deckbuilder, Gambonanza, Out Now on Steam and Mobile

Sidekick Publishing and Stray Fawn are pleased to announce that Gambonanza, the roguelike chess-builder from solo developer Blukulélé celebrates its full global launch on Steam, iOS and Android today.

Set on a tiny chess board where tactical risks yield high rewards, Gambonanza takes you on a strategy-packed roguelike adventure, where players can get lost in all the ways to break traditional chess and face off against challenging bosses using synergistic gambits in high-impact rounds.

In this vibrant pixel art world, you don’t have to be a chess expert to strategise your next move.

Following a successful public playtest earlier this year, Gambonanza became one of the most played demos at Steam Next Fest with over 170,000 downloads.

Today, in its full global launch, Gambonanza lands on Steam and mobile platforms with a range of eagerly awaited features, including over 150 Gambits inspired by real-life chess players such as:

  • The ROOOOOOK’s Gambit → GothamChess
  • Hyper Bullet’s* Gambit → Andrew Tang (PenguinGM1) (*players have ~30–15 seconds for the entire game)
  • Beth’s Gambit → The Queen’s Gambit (Netflix series)
  • Anna’s Family Gambit → Anna Cramling

As part of the launch, developer Blukulélé shares what inspired him to create Gambonanza in a series of short clips, providing insights into the story and development behind the game.

  • Synergistic Gambits: Over 150 Gambits allow players to alter the properties of their run, such as supercharging specific pieces or forcing enemies to skip turns.
  • Tactical Board Upgrades: Players can enhance the chessboard with golden squares, blessing tiles, and protective surfaces to gain a tactical edge.
  • Dynamic Reserve System: A unique off-board storage system allows players to keep extra pieces in reserve, deploying them at pivotal moments to shift the balance of power.
  • High-Impact Rounds: Smaller starting boards intensify the strategic tension, delivering quick yet deep gameplay sessions.
  • Retro Aesthetic: The game features vibrant pixel art and a nostalgic CRT filter, complemented by a quirky atmosphere and mini-games inspired by slot machines, pachinko and Gachapon.
  • Twitch Extension: Launching alongside release, the game features a custom Twitch Extension introducing a “Hand & Brain” mode for streamers and their live chat, turning each run into a collaborative experience with an interactive, stream-first gameplay loop.
