Design, Unpack, and Create in a Whole New Way
Indie publisher Pretty Soon and solo developer Niklas Tomkowitz are proud to announce a significant update to Small Spaces, the cozy interior design experience that invites players to decorate small apartments they can actually walk through. Since its Early Access launch on May 27th, the game has grown dramatically, driven by community feedback and fine tuning.
What’s New?
The centerpiece of the update is Unpacking Mode, a fresh, alternative play-loop where instead of selecting every item, players open surprise boxes and discover decor pieces to place freely. While the familiar full-freedom design mode remains, this new mode offers a relaxing, puzzle-light variant designed for both new and returning players.

Since its Early Access premiere, updates have also included:
- Hundreds of new furniture and material assets (community requested)
- Quality of Life improvements: smoother placement tools, improved lighting, and day/night transitions
- Enhanced performance and build stability following community beta testing
- A tighter, more polished experience that honors the over 90% positive review score the game has enjoyed
Why It Matters
Small Spaces sits at the intersection of creative sandbox and ambient experience: players design beautiful, compact apartments in cities like Tokyo, Berlin, and New York, walking through them in first person with no timers or pressure. The “small space” constraint becomes a creative feature – a place to experiment, unwind, and express design.

With the new update, Small Spaces broadens its appeal: to both those who love full design freedom and those who enjoy surprise, reveal moments, and simpler flows.
