Rewind 99 Brings the Last Video Store to Life in a Nostalgia-Fueled Co-Op Retail Sim

Gunmetal Games is excited to announce the upcoming release of Rewind 99, a nostalgia-infused retail simulation game arriving on Steam Early Access in March 2026. Set in the vibrant, low-poly world of 1999, Rewind 99 casts players as the manager of the world’s last remaining video rental store, battling against the rise of the futuristic streaming giant, RentNet.

In Rewind 99, players inherit a struggling video rental shop and must use all their wits and hustle to keep it alive in a world that’s already moved on. Stock shelves, assist customers, and build a thriving business by day – but true survival may require bending the rules after hours.

“I’ve always loved retail simulators like TCG Card Shop Simulator, but playing
Schedule I really opened my eyes to what open-world simulators could be,” said Richard Heyne, creator of Rewind 99. “I wanted to build a game that fully committed to both – where the Store and the World felt inseparable. Video rental stores felt like the perfect fantasy for that idea, especially wrapped in the chaos and nostalgia of the late ’90s. Rewind 99 is about running a store, sure – but it’s also about living in it.”

Players can:

  • Manage every aspect of retail life — Order movies, snacks, toys, and run daily store operations.
  • Explore Reshoot Springs — Ride scooters or wander a living, quirky town full of opportunities and secrets.
  • Hustle to survive — Create your own movies to compete with streaming, organize underground fight clubs, try scratch-card gambling, and unlock unconventional side hustles.
  • Play solo or with friends — Seamless co-op lets players share the struggle and success of running the last video rental store.

Gunmetal Games plans to support Rewind 99 throughout its Early Access period, delivering substantial updates that expand the world, introduce new goods, deepen customer networks, and add increasingly strange challenges and opportunities as players grow their business.

Features at a Glance

  • 1990s-era setting with nostalgic aesthetics and immersive open-world retail simulation
  • Deep retail management, inventory systems, business expansion, and customer interactions
  • Side hustles and emergent gameplay that extend far beyond traditional sim mechanics
  • Co-op play and social features that bring friends into the videotape preservation effort

Players can add Rewind 99 to their Steam wishlist today and follow development updates ahead of launch. Rewind 99 also plans to release a playable demo in mid-February and will participate in Steam Next Fest beginning February 23, 2026.
