The Roman-themed city-building game will enter early access in January
Hooded Horse and Lion Shield are pleased to reveal the early access release date for Nova Roma, their upcoming Roman-themed city-building game about establishing a new eternal city, complete with dynamic weather, water manipulation, divine intervention, and the ever-looming threat of barbarians and vengeful Emperors. Nova Roma will release into early access for PC on Steam and the Epic Games Store on January 22, 2026.
As the once-great Roman Empire falls into decadence and decay, players will lead a small band of citizens in search of new lands, hoping to build Nova Roma (New Rome) – a bastion for all that was once good in the Empire. Starting from a humble village, appease the gods with grand temples, sate the citizens’ many needs, and build a society that will be the envy of the world for millennia to come.
Nova Roma is the spiritual successor to the developer’s previous game, Kingdoms & Castles, and features similar mechanics in terms of logistics, the need for good city-planning, and being able to deal with disaster, of which there are many:
- A new feature for Nova Roma, water can be manipulated and redirected to the cities via aqueducts, but beware: if something happens to these vital pieces of infrastructure, the city will flood!
- The Gods are real – choose who to worship from the Greco-Roman Pantheon, and put on displays of worship to appease them. Completing quests earns favor, which is used in unlocking new technologies. Be careful, though; other Gods may get jealous, and in their wrath, they may rain down punishment on the city (like floods).
- Barbarians lurk in the wilds, eager to plunder and take what’s theirs. What’s more, the legions of the old Empire may venture forth and attempt to bring Nova Roma back into the fold, by force, if necessary. (Also may cause flooding. Maybe).
With careful planning, resilient citizens, and brave soldiers, the city of Nova Roma will be able to overcome all trials!
Nova Roma will be localized from English into German, French, Spanish, Italian, Polish, Czech, Hungarian, Turkish, Ukrainian, Russian, Brazilian Portuguese, Simplified Chinese, Traditional Chinese, Korean, and Japanese.
